Ludmilla Balkis

Ludmilla Balkis (b. 1981, Domont, France) is a ceramicist whose practice moves between restraint and material presence. After an early career in fashion, including time at Céline in London under Phoebe Philo, she shifted toward ceramics in search of something more grounded and essential.

Her work is informed by both European modernist traditions and a later encounter with Japanese approaches to clay, but remains deeply personal in its language. Now based in the Basque Country, Balkis works in close dialogue with the raw qualities of earth—favoring quiet forms, subtle irregularities, and a deliberate sense of imperfection.

Each piece carries a certain stillness. An attention to proportion, weight, and surface that feels instinctive rather than imposed.
